Promoting Psychological

Wellbeing among MSM

The focus of this chapter is on the promotion of psychological wellbeing among MSM. In this chapter, two case studies are presented. The first outlines possible self-identity issues that can arise among BPM MSM as they attempt to reconcile the distinct tenets, norms and values associated with their religious and sexual identities. The second case study focuses on the psychosocial challenges associated with an HIV diagnosis among MSM, particularly in view of the social stigma that surrounds both HIV and homosexuality, the feelings of shame and self-stigma that can accompany this, and possible difficulties in developing and maintaining social relationships in the aftermath of an HIV diagnosis. In both case studies, some illustrative quotes from qualitative interview research into the experiences of BPM gay men and MSM living with HIV, respectively, are presented. Illustrative quotes from the interview studies highlight some of the psychosocial issues which may be presented by MSM in clinical settings. Accordingly, the final section of this chapter outlines potential approaches to psychological support for promoting wellbeing among MSM. Recommendations are made for enhancing psychological support with insights from IPT.
